Gillibrand Bungles Over-Reaching Internet Bill Could Chase Thousands of Tech Jobs Out of New York St
New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-WFP) is sponsoring overreaching federal legislation that could drive thousands of high-tech Internet jobs out of New York State, the New York Republican State Committee today charged.
The state committee's comments come on a day when hundreds of New York technology leaders are scheduled to protest Senator Gillibrand's offices.
The misguided Gillibrand legislation called the "Protect IP Act" (PIPA) is being opposed by, among others, the founders of Google, Yahoo!, Twitter, PayPal, Firefox, Ebay,Craig's List, Wikipedia, The Huffington Post, and Netscape. Those leaders have pointedly warned Senator Gillibrand about the potentially disastrous effects of her bill.
Ms. Gillibrand's job-killing legislation, which would fundamentally change the make up of the Internet and give government bureaucrats the authority to block public access to thousands of websites -- the way China and North Korea do -- comes on the heels of her support for another New-York-job-killing bill, Obamacare.
"First do no harm has been a good oath for doctors, perhaps Senator Gillibrand should adopt it," said New York State Republican Chairman Ed Cox. "New York is trying to grow its economy, not chase more jobs out of the country with overreaching Washington regulations. Ms. Gillibrand helped force through Obamacare even after a Democratic governor and Mayor Bloomberg warned that it could devastate our health care sector, and now Senator Gillibrand is putting our budding Internet sector in jeopardy. Ms. Gillibrand may want to ask around before sponsoring any more bills."
Even President Obama has signaled that Senator Gillibrand's legislation would have a harmful effect on the U.S. economy.
